The warmth can loosen the crust from dried mucus allowing your eyes to open. It primarily consists of thin watery mucus produced by the conjunctiva called mucin and meibum an oily substance secreted by the meibomian glands which helps keep your eyes lubricated between blinks. The common cold often affects the eyes causing a condition called viral conjunctivitis or pink eye as it is commonly known. That sometimes comes in the form of emergency tears which don t have the same nourishing balance as regular tears.

Doctors may treat this condition with antibiotics. Sterile gauze moistened with warm water can be used to clean matted eyes and then discarded to minimize germs. The eyes often turn red burn and have a sticky discharge 1. It can be temporary such as when you wake up in the morning or persistent in which case medical attention should be considered.

Causes of eye discharge. If your eyes are glued shut from dried discharge take a warm washcloth and gently wipe your eyes. Your toddler s eyes might also be light sensitive and itch or burn. Head to your physician as the usual course of treatment is antibiotics and watch for other symptoms such as ear pain which indicates worsening infection.
