Ceramics is no longer just thought of as a craft taken up in retirement or taught in elementary school. Ceramics have been reborn in recent years placed firmly in an art context. Influenced by the ancient craft of pottery itself alongside the 19th century arts and crafts movement and the 20th century german bauhaus movement british pottery was developed through teachings at the camberwell school of art and central school of art and design. Mugs are no longer simply knick knack memorabilia brought home from gift shops but being sold alongside gorgeous jewelry and fancy clothing at places like mociun and steven alan.

Ogawa is one of six women to be awarded the japanese ceramic society prize and was the first woman admitted to the prestigious ceramic department at the tokyo national university of fine arts music a true pioneer for female ceramic artists. None of these artists working with ceramics and porcelain could ever be pigeonholed in a category so small and unimaginative. Artists and artisans working with ceramics have steadily contributed to the art world for centuries. These are ten of the most interesting artists working with this sculptural medium.
